Pierce Johnson, a 34-year-old right-hander, has signed a $6.5 million, one-year contract with the Reds. But here's the twist: Johnson's decision was heavily influenced by his best friend, Emilio Pagan, who happens to be the closer on the Reds' staff. Johnson shared, "When you have your best friend selling you on something, it’s easy to buy in."
With an impressive 3-3 record and a 3.05 ERA in 65 games for Atlanta last year, Johnson brings veteran experience to the Reds' bullpen. And get this: he even had a streak of retiring 26 batters over nine games! Johnson is entering his ninth big league season, and his contract includes some serious incentives.
"Tito’s team plays the game the right way," Johnson said, referring to manager Terry Francona. "I’m excited to join these guys and see what we can achieve this year."
Johnson's addition fills the gap left by the departures of Scott Barlow, Nick Martinez, and Brent Suter. The Reds finished eighth in the National League with a 3.89 ERA last season, and they're looking to build on that success.
And this is the part most people miss: Johnson's contract includes a $500,000 assignment bonus if he's traded, along with performance bonuses for games pitched and games finished. He's got a solid track record, with a 21-24 record and a 3.79 ERA in 328 starts and two relief appearances across multiple teams. To make room for Johnson, the Reds designated right-hander Yosver Zulueta for assignment and then traded him to Seattle for minor leaguer right-hander Dusty Revis. The Mariners, in turn, designated infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor for assignment.
