This rapid evolution is not limited to lizards. Urban foxes, raccoons, and even hares are all adapting to city life in unique ways. This is evident in the case of armadillos in Illinois, which have been spotted near major roads. Researchers believe that the armadillos are using the roads to regulate their body temperature, a behavioral adaptation that could eventually lead to genetic changes over time.
The Songbirds' Story
Birds, too, are adapting to urban life. Many species have altered their songs to be heard above the din of traffic, a remarkable example of behavioral flexibility. But it's not just their songs that have changed. Take the dark-eyed junco, for example. This bird has become less aggressive and has even developed fewer white feathers on its tail, a trait used in aggressive displays. They have also altered their migration patterns and breeding habits, all in response to the challenges of city life.
Beyond the City Limits
Extreme evolution is not limited to urban environments. Animals are also physiologically changing to survive living with humans. The rise in tuskless elephants is a prime example. In areas where poaching is a major threat, being tuskless has become an evolutionary advantage, as poachers target elephants with tusks.
