The charging points on Mill Street, conveniently located near the town center and attractions like Ludlow Castle, are frequently blocked by petrol and diesel cars. 'They’ve installed the poles for signs, but the signs themselves are nowhere to be seen,' Diamond notes, adding that this issue persists 'for most of the day.'
The situation has become so dire that Diamond has resorted to installing a charging point at his home, costing him around £1,400. However, without a driveway, he’s now waiting for the council to install a cable gully outside his front door, which would allow him to safely run a charging cable to his car. The council had promised this would be completed by January, but the work has been indefinitely delayed due to 'significant internal pressure' and 'ongoing financial challenges.'
Here’s the real kicker... Earlier this month, council leaders revealed they might need to borrow nearly £800 million over the next five years to address growing funding gaps. This raises a critical question: Is the push for electric vehicles outpacing the infrastructure needed to support them?
Diamond doesn’t hold back in his criticism. 'The whole idea of going green with cars is a complete misconception,' he says. 'It’s a farce. There’s simply no infrastructure big enough to handle it. If you want peace of mind, don’t buy an electric car.'
A spokesperson for the council acknowledged the issues with the Mill Street chargers, explaining that while the units were installed as part of an early scheme, the necessary traffic regulations and signage were never completed. 'Our highways and parking teams are assessing the options and timelines, and we’ll provide an update once this work is done,' they stated. Regarding the cable gullies, the council reiterated their financial constraints and noted they’ve applied for funding from the Department for Transport to move the project forward.
