In a significant development for Australian cricket, Sophie Molineux has officially been appointed as the new all-format captain, taking over from the highly regarded Alyssa Healy. This announcement was made public on January 28, 2026, indicating that Molineux will lead the team for the first time during the upcoming T20I matches in a multi-format series against India at home.
Molineux’s selection as captain comes as a surprise to some, especially considering that she has not participated in T20I or Test matches since 2024 due to a knee injury. Despite this, she has demonstrated remarkable leadership skills, particularly when she led the Melbourne Renegades to a championship victory in the 2024-25 season, marking a significant achievement for the club after a long title drought. Her ability to inspire and guide her team has undoubtedly played a crucial role in her elevation to the national captaincy.
In her new position, Molineux will work alongside Tahlia McGrath, who retains her role as vice-captain, and Ashleigh Gardner, who has been appointed as a second vice-captain. "It’s a tremendous honor to be named captain, and I am immensely proud, especially following in Alyssa's footsteps, who has had such a profound impact on both the team and the sport," Molineux expressed in her first statement as captain.
She further emphasized the strength and depth of the current squad, filled with natural leaders and emerging talent. Molineux is enthusiastic about the prospect of working collaboratively to evolve the team while maintaining the core values that define its unique identity.
With her extensive experience and understanding of the game, Molineux is poised to lead Australia through crucial upcoming events, beginning with the three T20Is against India in February. Following these matches, Healy will return to captain the side in her farewell ODI series and final Test match at the WACA ground in early March.
Looking ahead, Molineux is set to captain the team during its multi-format tour of the Caribbean, which includes a Test match, and she will also prepare to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup scheduled in England this June. National selector Shawn Flegler has acknowledged Molineux's appointment as the right choice, noting the need to carefully manage her workload due to past injuries.
"We will prioritize key tournaments and international series while continuing to monitor Sophie’s condition closely after her recent injury challenges," Flegler stated, reinforcing the team's commitment to Molineux's health and performance.
In a notable shift, legspinner Alana King will not be part of the T20I squad for the upcoming India series, following a challenging stint in the WBBL. In contrast, Nicola Carey makes a return to the white-ball squads, likely playing her first international match since 2022 after showcasing impressive form in domestic competitions.
The veteran player Megan Schutt appears to have played her last ODI, having been omitted from the squad. Additionally, 19-year-old Lucy Hamilton has been selected for her first international squad, bringing fresh energy as a promising left-arm fast bowler.
Flegler highlighted Carey's contributions, saying, "Nicola has excelled in domestic cricket over the past few years and performed admirably overseas, making her an asset as we move towards the T20 World Cup." He also praised Hamilton for her dedication and potential, believing she can significantly impact the team's future.
Both Hamilton and King are set to compete in a warm-up T20 match as part of the Governor-General's XI against India on February 13, prior to the commencement of the official series on February 15.
