A tragic and mysterious illness has claimed the lives of 72 tigers at the Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai, a popular tourist destination in Thailand. This devastating loss has sparked an urgent investigation, leaving many questions unanswered.
Among the 240 tigers residing across the two facilities, the outbreak has left experts and animal lovers alike searching for explanations.
"The challenge is that tigers, unlike our beloved pets, can hide their illnesses, making it difficult to detect their suffering," explained Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, director of the national livestock department.
Initial tests revealed a deadly combination of canine distemper virus and a respiratory disease-causing bacteria. Canine distemper, a highly contagious disease, attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems, and is often fatal for big cats.
But here's where it gets controversial: the provincial livestock office initially suspected feline parvovirus, and some officials even pointed the finger at contaminated raw chicken meat.
This isn't the first time raw chicken has been implicated in a tiger tragedy. In 2004, a bird flu outbreak at a tiger zoo in Chonburi province resulted in the death or euthanasia of nearly 150 tigers.
Despite the potential risk to humans, the disease control department reported that none of the veterinarians or staff working with the tigers had fallen ill. However, they are being monitored for 21 days as a precaution.
Animal rights groups are using this tragedy to shed light on the poor living conditions of captive tigers used for entertainment.
Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand released a statement emphasizing the extreme vulnerability of captive wildlife facilities to infectious diseases.
"Tragedies like this could be avoided if tourists chose to stay away from these attractions," Peta Asia told AFP.
In the wake of this heart-wrenching loss, Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai has temporarily closed its doors for two weeks to allow officials to conduct disinfection work.
