On January 26, 2001, an earthquake claimed over 20,000 lives and destroyed countless villages. Mr. Solanki, a news cameraman, was deployed to Gujarat to cover the disaster for the BBC. Despite his extensive experience covering wars, famines, and natural calamities, this tragedy hit close to home as his family hailed from Gujarat.
Upon returning to Leicester, Mr. Solanki approached his alma mater, Rushey Mead Academy, located in an area with a significant Gujarati community. He sought support to establish the Rushey Mead Foundation, aiming to aid one of the most affected regions. The school's motto, "Be concerned, and do something about it," resonated deeply with Mr. Solanki, and his former teacher, Jean McDiarmid, wholeheartedly agreed to assist.
The foundation's first initiative was to construct the very first high school in a village near Bhuj, named after their own school. Rushey Mead School in Nagor opened its doors almost two decades ago and continues to receive support from donors in Leicester.
Mr. Solanki expresses his pride in the fact that 500 students have now successfully completed their exams, a significant achievement in a community where many children previously dropped out of the education system at an early age. He attributes this success to the inspiration drawn from his mother, an intelligent woman from a poor family who never had the opportunity to pursue an education.
During his recent visit to Nagor in December, Mr. Solanki witnessed children learning mathematics in a traditional classroom setting while, in another room, students worked on modern computer equipment funded by the Rushey Mead Foundation. The head teacher, Hitesh Marwada, highlighted that donations from Leicester also assist families who cannot afford the basic school registration fee.
Mr. Marwada emphasized the impact of the school's name, Rushey Mead, in a Gujarati-speaking area, stating that it has brought about significant changes in the village over the past 20 years. Retired teacher Mrs. McDiarmid added that the foundation has empowered a generation of girls through education.
Mr. Solanki's pride in their achievements is evident as he notes the positive changes in the village, especially the increased independence of the girls. He believes they have not only provided a meal but helped individuals shape their lives.
